How is natural stone extracted?
Mining sites for natural stone can be found all over the globe. Depending on the local geological conditions and the development of earth's history, different varieties in different colors can be found in each country. Italy for example, is well known for it's wide variety of marble worlwide!
For most of human existence, all types of natural stone were extracted by hand - a daunting and very physical activity. Nowadays however, diamond wire saws are usually used to mine faster, more efficiently and with less cost. These more efficient mining techniques and the use of heavy machinery, has made natural stones more accessible to all and allows for more affordable pricing.
More important for you then the extraction process however, is the stone formation process. It plays a vital role in the stones color, durability, size and natural properties.

-
Pumice stone, for example, is formed during volcanic eruptions when the lava that has escaped cools very quickly. It contains so much air that it even floats on water.
-
Layered rocks such as limestone or sandstone are much better suited for construction. These stones are composed of the remains of animals, plants, minerals and rock fragments that are deposited and pressed onto each other. Due to this strong long-lasting pressure of the weight, the materials are compressed and hardened.
-
Marble is also formed in the interior of the earth in layers of stone that are pressed together, here the particularly high temperatures and a very high pressure help the minerals to realign and crystallize. The so-called rock transformation.

It is therefore clear that all natural stones have very different properties. That is why they have been used for thousands of years for us humans, from tools to our own homes.
